Sun, 27 Feb 2022 17:21:26 +0000https://folio.legreann.com/?p=1101One Summer in the mid-seventies, I joined the Tolley’s and their friends on a trip to Mount Washington. This was in the days before cell phones and GPS. Richard probably had a year or two of driving experience. A few coins in your pocket could get you a “Collect” phone call back home and a paper map got you to your destination. So off we went in the Tolley’s Ford LTD.; Richard, Frank, Mike, Doug and myself.
Below is a gallery of pics I scanned and cleaned up. I assume Richard brought a Kodak Instamatic camera because unfortunately, he isn’t in any of the pics. I’m about to send them this post. Maybe they will have a few more pics to offer. Captions are from notes I wrote on the back of each pic. Click on a pic for a full size image.
1.5 miles of climbing straight upA stream near camp before the rain (Osgood Bridge?)Up on the road overlooking the halfway house. Mt. Jefferson is in the background. The weather was nice but didn’t stay that way for long.Mt. Washington observatory on a sunny day.Me, Mike, Doug, Frank and Richard on top.All of us standing on the USGS benchmark. 20-30 mph winds, 60 degrees and lots of fog.Camp before the rain.Camp during the rain. Powdered eggs and pine needles for breakfast. There was a pint or so of soggy cream of wheat in the bottom of the tent. There was also a funny rumbling sound from below camp.Coming down after the rain through dense growth. The stream after the rain.Osgood bridge (?) came in handy for this stream. Not all streams had them as we soon found out.All at the bottom and ready to leave.A post card with aerial viewA post card with the train
