2024 May Italy Trip: Kotor Montenegro and Split Croatia
We crossed the Adriatic for more sights of ancient destinations.
Kotor Montenegro: We took a tender boat to the docks of the medieval town of Kotor. The town was surrounded by fortified walls that extended from the bay up the steep and dramatic slopes of the Lovćen mountains in the background. We causally walked the streets passing by several Romanesque churches (mid-11th century). There was also a courtyard with housing for feral cats. The “Cat Angel”, Danijela has been spaying, feeding and caring for these cats for over 30 years. She appeared while we were there and we donated some Euros for her cause. We then stopped for a bite to eat at the Dalmatinska konoba Cesarica. There was a single woman serving when we arrived who scurried back and forth from kitchen to table. We tipped her well for her efforts, great food and pleasant service.
Split Croatia: We walked from the ship directly to our primary point of interest, Diocletion’s Palace. The palace was built in the late third century as a place of retirement by the Roman emperor Diocletian. The palace is massive and encompasses much of the old town area. We entered through the Silver Gate and made our way to the Peristyle Square which was packed with tourists and a few Roman Centurions. We descended into the cellars of the palace and walked through the maze of rooms and historical displays. We exited the cellars and ventured over to the foreboding Gregory of Nin statue. Skirting a couple more Centurions, we walked back to the ship to take a load off of our sore feet.
