View of Mt. Denali at McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge

2023 Alaska Trip: May 22nd – May 25th

We boarded a coach at the Princess Denali Wilderness Lodge on Monday, May 22nd and headed north to the Princess McKinley Wilderness Lodge. The weather was once again in our favor with blue skies and fluffy Cumulus clouds. We had clear views of Mt. Denali from the back deck of the lodge. Only 30% of visitors actually see Mt. Denali so we were officially added to the “30% Club”. We dropped our backpacks in our room in Building 5, explored the grounds and got some grub at the 20,320 Alaskan Grill. I already had plans to hike up to the Treehouse but was bummed when I discovered the lower trail was closed. The Treehouse was built by Pete Nelson who is known for his Treehouse Masters show on Animal Planet. We later ordered some beverages and took pics of the mountains. On Tuesday, May 23rd, we were informed that our Jet Boat excursion was cancelled due to high waters. The day was open for kicking back and enjoying the views. I noticed there were people on the Treehouse deck so I checked the lodge map. I saw there was also an upper trail so I hiked up to the trail head. I was thrilled to find it was open and I was able to get pics from the overhanging deck. On Wednesday, May 24th we took another coach to our final destination in Anchorage. We arrived at the Captain Cook Hotel relatively early but couldn’t check in until 4:00 PM. We got lunch at nearby Simon and Seafort’s Restaurant and then took the trolley tour which provided local points of interest including seaplanes landing on Lake Hood and a stop at Earthquake Park. We checked in later and I ordered carry out for dinner. We had to check out at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 25th but our coach to the airport wasn’t due to arrive until the afternoon. We grabbed some brunch at Cubby’s in the hotel and then grabbed our laden backpacks and walked several blocks to the Anchorage Museum. We dodged a number of homeless people along the way before arriving at the entrance. The museum had very nice displays and multi-media presentations. We headed back to the Hotel afterwards and boarded our coach to the Anchorage Airport for a Red Eye flight to Chicago.
