Alberobello Trulli Hut Roof Detail

2024 May Italy Trip: Brindisi, Alberobello Italy

From the port of Brindisi, we took a tour bus to the hilly town of Alberobello. The town is famous for its little, round, white houses with conical roofs that resemble Hobbit huts. I found them fascinating. The trulli were originally constructed as temporary field housing that could be dismantled quickly before the tax inspectors came to town. Key stones in the roof could be removed to collapse them swiftly and therefore invalidating the structures as a taxable housing unit. The tour started at the smaller, less crowded Rione Aia Piccola and afforded views across the piazza to the larger, touristy Rione Monti. The steep climb to the top of Rione Monti presented a large variety of uniquely decorated houses and souvenir shops. We had lunch at the Maxelâ Alberobello before regrouping with the tour guide. The tour continued to the Cantina Masseria Torricella for a wine tasting. The tasting turned out to be a complete lunch served with three different wines. We certainly had our fill.
