2023 Alaska Trip: May 18th
On Thursday, May 18th at 6:15 AM, it was Day 6 of our cruise as we arrived in Glacier Bay. The sun’s morning rays promised another crystal clear and consecutive day for scenic views. Cindi captured a picture of a Pilot Boat in the morning as it approached the Majestic, matched speed, and steered alongside. Park Rangers laden with back packs deftly climbed rope ladders to board the ship. They provided navigational assistance to the helm and informative narratives to the passengers over the ship’s public address system. Mark Harris, the Majestic’s Naturalist and Marine Biologist also offered his daily narrative as we explored the sights of each destination. A large screen monitor in our stateroom displayed audio and video from the forward observatory deck during these sessions. This also helped me to determine whether the action was on the Port or Starboard sides of the ship. I could run up a single flight of stairs to the open areas of deck 16 and 17 to get better shots of the sights on either side. You really have to be there to understand the scale of these glaciers. I’ve included a few frames with smaller vessels navigating closer to them for comparison.
